We welcome you to join our Coral Farming Assistant marine conservation NGO team. Help grow and develop new coral rock beds on their coral nursery. Then transplant them onto the reef once they are mature.
Coral Farming Assistant Marine conservation is a fantastic opportunity. During your time there you will be focusing mainly on water based activities such as coral farming, seahorse spotting or survey dives and reef clean ups
Once the coral farm has grown new coral nubbins, cleaning is required to keep the algae off the fragments. When they are healthy enough, then new frames can be made and new broken corals that we come across from the natural reef can be introduced. They take broken coral fragments and give them a chance to rehabilitate and survive at the nursery. Some frames will stay at the nursery for good as fish are using them as homes.
Reef cleans are also important to get rid of any trash. Sometimes old fishing nets off the natural reefs. They also offer the chance to do Seahorse surveys. Or even Seahorse spotting dives to try to find them and identify what species they are.
We work directly with the Ministry of Fisheries and Conservation in the Cambodian Government and provide our data and regular reports to them.
The Coral Farming Assistant play a vital role to help keep the project alive and also to help keep the corals, on our nursery alive. Its fantastic to see the huge impact that the coral nursery has had in the ocean to date.
Our volunteers have a unique experience and leave us with some great memories. If you dont have your Scuba certifications our NGO can organise for you to do it for a discounted price to the normal cost. Just let us know and we will send you prices. Come join our local NGO there. You will have no regrets after it.
During your stay at the local site you will be extremely active and involved with a wide range of marine conservation. There will be task and activities of marine conservation that you will become a part of and learn how to take part in.
- Reef cleans in groups, where you will take an empty bag and enjoy a fun dive on one of the many reefs collecting any refuse that you can see.
- If you want something a more knowledgeable dive you will also participate the seahorse survey. In this survey you will be looking to spot various seahorses and to obtain as much detail on those seahorses as you can get and pictures too if possible.
- The team also builds and maintain their own coral nursery. This rehabilitates damaged reefs and to build our own artificial reef, you will be assisting them to build new coral rock beds, maintain the existing ones and also help to transplant corals that are ready to be moved to the reefs in the oceans.
- Regular beach cleans, village cleans and recycling are an important part on dry land to help make sure that trash does not end up in the ocean. These are done regularly.
Aside from the fantastic work on land and underwater, you will also get to relax and enjoy the relaxed life that Koh Rong Sanloem has to offer. You will be able to get to know the local villagers. They are very kind and friendly. You will meet and make many new friends here on the island and even after you leave the project.
The first day mostly consists of travel to Pai Bay (fishing village). Here you get to meet and greet with locals. We settle you in and then you have free time to get to know your surroundings. Most days consist of an early morning construction or land project followed by a coral reef clean. Then lunch and either a reef clean or a project on the coral nursery. This all depends on the certs that the volunteers hold to what project they will be on. The volunteer will get to two dives a day but some days there are land projects to do. The schedule is adjusted based on the capabilities of each volunteer. We all have dinner together in the evenings and after that then your free to do as you wish on your own. Each volunteer will get one day off per week to enjoy some site seeing and spending time around the island
The bay is great for swimming and snorkelling. Also, you can trek around the island. And, there is a private waterfall you can go to on your days off.
Sometimes you many just want to relax on the beach or socialize with other volunteers in the quiet village. However, there are restaurants and bars open at night. There are shops and Internet access but both are limited. If you bring Cambodian sim card, make sure it is a Smart phone card as no others work on the island.
